In terms of cross-generation play and cross-progression, Elden Ring does not support full cross-play between consoles or between consoles and PC.
Crossplay Limitations
No Crossplay Between Different Consoles: You cannot play with others on different console brands. For example, PlayStation users cannot play with Xbox or PC users, and vice versa.
Cross-Generation Play
•PlayStation: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can play together.
•Xbox: Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S players can play together.
•This means if you're upgrading from an older console to a newer one within the same console family (Sony or Microsoft), you'll still be able to play with friends who might not have upgraded.
How to Play Multiplayer in Elden Ring
Co-op Play:
•Summoning: Use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to see summon signs left by other players. You can find these signs on the ground and activate them to summon players into your world for co-op.
•Password System: To play with specific friends, you can use a password system. This ensures only those with the same password can see and interact with your summon signs. Set this in the game's Multiplayer menu under Multiplayer Password.
Player vs Player (PvP):
•Invading: Use items like the Festering Bloody Finger to invade other players' worlds.
•Dueling: Drop a red summon sign using items like the Small Red Effigy or Duelist’s Furled Finger for other players to challenge you to a duel.
Setting Up Multiplayer:
•Online Status: Ensure your game is set to online mode in the settings.
•Multiplayer Menu: Access the Multiplayer menu to set your preferences for co-op or PvP, manage your passwords, and see which items you have for multiplayer actions.
Cross-Progression
•Within Console Families: Elden Ring does support cross-progression between console generations. For example, if you start playing on PS4 and later move to PS5, you can transfer your save data.
•PS4 to PS5: You can transfer your game data via the cloud save feature on PlayStation Network or by moving save data directly if you're using the same PSN account.
•Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S: Thanks to Smart Delivery, your progress should seamlessly transfer when you upgrade your console, provided you're logged into the same Xbox Live account.
Tips for Multiplayer
•Level Requirements: There's a level range system for co-op and invasions, meaning you'll only see summon signs or be able to invade players near your level.
•World Tendency: The game has a system that can make certain areas more or less difficult based on player actions, which can affect multiplayer encounters.
•Etiquette: There's an unspoken code of conduct in Elden Ring's community. For example, waving or bowing before duels is common, as is not attacking right away in some PvP situations.
Community and Update Considerations
•Mods and Cheating: Since there's no crossplay, PC players on Steam might have access to mods, which can affect multiplayer balance, but this isn't an issue across different platforms due to the lack of crossplay.
•Future Updates: While there's no current plan for full crossplay, developers might add this feature in a future update, but it's not something players should count on.
Note: Despite not offering crossplay across platforms, Elden Ring offers cross-generation play within the same console ecosystem, and there is cross-progression within those systems. There are options to use passwords to play with specific friends for both co-op and PvP. |
