Understanding enemy types, their affixes, and behaviors is crucial in Diablo 4 for efficient PvE gameplay. Tailoring your combat strategy to the enemies you face, using your environment, and adapting to new challenges as you progress through the game will significantly enhance your ability to survive and thrive in the dark world of Sanctuary. Always keep learning from each encounter to refine your tactics.

Enemy Types

Common Enemies

Demons: Basic melee and ranged attackers. They come in various forms like Fallen, Goatmen, or Skeletons.

Strategy: Use area of effect (AoE) attacks for groups, and single-target for tougher variants like Shamans.

Beasts: Animals like Spiders, Bears, or Wolves.

Strategy: They often charge or leap. Keep distance when possible, or use crowd control to manage swarms.

Elite Enemies

Champions: These have extra health and one or more affixes like Electrified, Frozen, or Mortar.

Strategy: Focus on one affix at a time. Use terrain to avoid area effects like Mortar blasts.

Unique Monsters: Often have names, unique abilities, and more complex affixes like Arcane Enchanted or Teleporter.

Strategy: Study their patterns. Arcane Enchanted enemies create rotating beams; stay between them. Teleporters require quick reaction to their sudden movements.

Bosses

World Bosses: Massive enemies like Ashava or Avarice that require multiple players or strategic solo play.

Strategy: Learn their attack patterns. Use defensive cooldowns during high-damage phases. Coordinate with other players if in a group.

Dungeon Bosses: Unique to each dungeon with specific mechanics.

Strategy: Each boss has a set of moves. Dodge their heavy hits, manage adds (additional enemies), and exploit their vulnerabilities when they're stunned or in a vulnerable state.

Enemy Affixes

Shielding: Enemies with shields. Use high burst damage or abilities that bypass or quickly deplete shields.

Vampiric: Heals from attacking. Use stuns or freezes to interrupt their healing.

Juggernaut: High health and damage reduction. Slow and steady wins; use kiting techniques.

Plagued: Leaves toxic pools on death. Positioning is key; lure them away from their pools.

Fire Enchanted: Explodes upon death. Kill from a distance or prepare to move quickly after defeating them.

Crowd Control (CC): Use stuns, freezes, or slows to manage large groups or to stop dangerous elites from using their abilities.

Kiting: Keep moving to avoid being surrounded or hit by ranged attacks. This is especially useful against enemies with melee focus.

Resource Management: Ensure you have enough of your class's resource (Mana, Spirit, Fury, etc.) to use key abilities when needed.

Positioning: Always be aware of your surroundings. Use doorways or narrow paths to funnel enemies, reducing the number you fight at once.

Focus Fire: In groups, target the most dangerous enemies first, like healers or those with damaging affixes.

Adapting to Enemy Tactics Checklist

Learn from Death: If an enemy type or boss kills you, analyze what went wrong. Did you stand in a bad spot? Were you out of cooldowns?

Use the Environment: Lure enemies into traps or environmental hazards like explosive barrels or falling chandeliers.

Seasonal Mechanics: Some seasons introduce new enemy behaviors or types. Adapt your strategy to these seasonal changes, like dealing with Malignant enemies in Season 1.

Nightmare Dungeons: Enemies here have multiple affixes. Prepare for combinations like Frozen and Mortar, requiring both mobility and defensive skills.

World Tiers: Higher tiers mean tougher enemies with more complex affixes. Gear and skill choices should reflect the need for both damage and survivability.
